Since the company was founded in 1836 until the enlargement of the European Union in 2004, C. Spaarmann was mainly active as a customs and cross-border transport company. Initiated in the mid-‘90s and successfully realised within one decade has become the greatest challenge in the history of the company. C. Spaarmann looks back at a successful development from a former family business which has been specialised in customs clearance between East and West to a medium-sized, international active forwarding and logistics company - with branches in Central and Eastern Europe, Russia and Central Asia. Since 2018, C. Spaarmann has been part of the globally operating Rhenus Group. Opening of a sales office in Leipzig.


Foundation of a branch in the Slovakian town of Budkovce nearby the Ukrainian border and in the Kazakh metropolis Almaty. The branch in Almaty established several cooperation agreements with partner- forwarding agencies in Bishkek (KG) and Tashkent (UZ). This ensures the entry to the markets in Central Asia.


With the enlargement of the European Union there is a second drastic turning-point in the customs sector. The European customs frontiers are further moved to the East, customs clearances at the hitherto border-crossing points disappear without replacement.

However, contrary to many other customs forwarding agents, C. Spaarmann is in a position to keep this traditional section of the company going in the customs offices at Duisburg, Frankfurt/Oder and Forst and even create new offices of clearance at the Polish eastern border.

By the end of the year, the network of offices in Russia was being extended.

With the beginning of the year, the company's headquarter was being moved from Emmerich to Forst (Lausitz) in the south of Brandenburg as a result of a strengthened orientation of the company to the Eastern markets.

On 01.04.2001 the staff celebrates the inauguration of the new terminal in Forst (Lausitz). In the immediate vicinity of the motorway A 15 is an area of about 2.500 m² of customs bonded warehouse, 10.000m² of outdoor stock and a parking range for approx. 30 lorries available. Customs authorities have become direct neighbours.


On 1st January 2000 Mr. Hans-Peter Otto is appointed managing director. Under his management the extension of the forwarding business is being consistently continued and pushed ahead. The forwarding departments that existed at Emmerich and Mülheim (Ruhr) are united at the Duisburg site.

On 4 November Mr. Kurt-Rüdiger-Müller, managing partner of the company, dies at the age of 40 after a short, severe disease.
